The Interment
Funeral for the 3rd Crew of the CSS H.L. Hunley
Scenes from the Burial and the Cemetery
Below are pictures from
the burial service. At the very bottom of
this page is the program for
interment.

I am grateful to those who provided
these pictures for our use.

At the far (top) right is our friend
and honorary member of the
Dixie Guards, Steve Burke.
Steve was honored to be chosen
as a member of the pall bearers and
we are all proud for him. No one works
harder to preserve our heritage than
Steve. (Steve has on the red hat.)

At right is a picture showing the caskets
as they arrived at the cemetery.

Here the caskets are
being unloaded. You can see how people
strained to get a view and/or picture
of the caskets.

Here the caskets are being carried to the
viewing platform.

Here are the caskets atop the viewing
platform. This was taken after Capt.
Dixon's last rites (Masonic).

This picture at right shows
some of the crowd as they
gathered to listen to the last rites.

view.

This is another shot of the crowd
and the platform.

At right is a shot of the confederate navy
reenactors carrying one of the caskets.
Trailing the casket is the bearer of the
Confederate Medal of Honor.

Here is a close up of the medal.

At right (close) soldiers are shown
lowering the caskets into the grave.

At far right, ladies in period
dresses mingle.

Below is the program for interment.

Inset is another picture of the crowd.
